My 08' KLR

My 08' KLR

Although this ride to the Waldo flea market was a half day affair (into the next county), I brought tools and spares inside the yellow waterproof duffel (on the pillion) in the event I had a flat tire...I would be able to replace or repair a punctured tube

My emergency kit contians various hand tools, a way to inflate a tire, bottle of water, hand cleaner, jumper cables, on and on. for me anyway, it's bad ju-ju not to carry this stuff with you for any real distance. Unfortunately, I don't have any solid lockable luggage on my KLR so the tools and spares go into a duffel strapped onto the pillion/rear carrier. I like to be safe rather than sorry, in the event of a punctured tire or a flat battery. One never knows.

I could probably condense this kit into a tank bag that would fit espressly for the KLR (think Wolfman) but I'm too cheap to drop a buck and a half ($150) for a proper tank bag. the duffel works fine but is a PITA to tote off the bike. I didn't feel comfortable leaving the duffel straped to my bike while I was checking out the flea market so I carried the bag with me

Rear door has two holes that were holding the spare tire. If you are using the bike carrier, the spare tire does not fit, but could be placed back on.

Bikers and beers. In most parts of the country, those two elements may be reasons to move elsewhere. But in the foothills of Colorado's Front Range, bikers mean cyclists: Fort Collins has 29 miles of well-used trails.

As for beers, this town has become a high-end microbrew mecca. New Belgium Brewery (maker of Fat Tire) is based in this entrepreneurial town, and competitors are moving in.

People here aren't slackers either. Bolstered by Colorado State University, which employs 7,000, "the Fort" is a center of economic activity. Hewlett-Packard, the city's second-largest employer, announced worldwide layoffs in June, but they won't affect Fort Collins. In fact, the company is adding jobs here.

This idyllic town -- No. 1 in 2006 -- would rank even higher but for one thing. (No, it's not last summer's Balloon Boy hoax, perpetrated by the local Heene family.) Colorado schools are hurting. After the state sliced public schools budget this year, Fort Collins's Poudre School District laid off 139 full-time employees. --Pieter van Noordennen

A highway of white

A highway of white

The E-18 on Sunday night. I'm driving with a set of new winter wheels, feeling confident* enough to take a snapshot of the tyre-tracked winter wonderland.

No need to worry. Not only was I pretty much all by myself on the road, I wasn't going very fast either.

* Quite frankly, driving on the old rather worn ones on winding, slippery, slushy country roads last Friday night scared the hell out of me, so I decided that was it, the ultimate it, and bought new Dunlops on Saturday. It makes all of the driving difference in the world.

1 Train to Nowhere

1 Train to Nowhere

3/13/05
Race Report

Very long version: Alarm goes on at 4am and I wake up ready to go. Coffee. Bathroom. Eat. Drink. Dress. Leave.

At 5am I'm at the 181st 1/9 station in the picture above. At 5:15am I'm at the 181st 1/9 station above. I put on my iPod. Before I can get nervous, the train comes. At 5:30 I'm at 96th street to transfer. I read the route map for the 2. What?? No train until 6am??? The race starts at 6:30. I ask some people, apparently on their way home from Saturday night. They don't know. I pace. I walk in circles. I consider riding the rest of the way. I look at the map again. I have mistakenly read the legend as the map. The train comes at 5:45am, and the race is on. It's running local. At about 6 we're at 42nd st, and 6:10 puts us at Wall St. Registration is now closed. I'm preregistered. I practice my breathing exercises. Release tension, and breathe. Breathe in the energy, breathe out the stress. I change into my racing clothes, missing only my number. People look at me funny. 6:20 and I'm at my stop. Race starts in 10 minutes. So much for warming up.

My warm up consists only of a 1/2 mile sprint to the registration table. Just as I roll up a man starts calling out, "Sorry if you're late. We are closed." I walk past him to the table. I'm allowed to sign in. I rip off my jersey and pin the number on. Get dressed again. Then I ride up a paved but dirty path a hundred yards to pee. Breathe in the energy, pee out the stress. Now I'm relaxed, ready and one pound lighter, if not warm. The 3/4 pack is the biggest, so we start first. We're off. I'm feeling good, but need to warm up. After the hill I work my way up to the front. The pack is moving too slow so I go to the front and start pulling harder to warm up. And then 3 of us are off the front for a while. We start taking quick pulls, so the pack gets nervous and jumps back on. They catch us just as we finish the first of 10 3.2 mile laps.....And I have a flat tire.

No free lap rule. No spare wheels. I finish changing my tube just as the 3/4 field is coming around again. I jump on and ride hard for a lap. Then I decide it's best to play it safe and stay out of everyone's way. I spend the rest of the race sitting up in the back. With 2 laps to go I watch the break ride off the front. My HR monitor shows 128. &**#^^!!%^!!!! 61 BPMs to burn and nowhere to go.

Cost per mile of racing including subway fare, Clif Bar and electricity to recharge iPod: $10.937656. See you next week.

I'm back!! Well my back anyway. I'm not back yet.
I want to show how I feel with MY Fibromyalgia, CFS how it would look.
((Everyones Fibro or CFS is differant.))
As you can see the pain is everywhere and everything over laps.
Right now it is very severe and not getting better. But what I am showing here is a normal day, not what I feel right now. I take things that help some but don't make it all go away.
Also I am exhausted like you would be after a hard mentally, physically exhausting week with little sleep. That is a normal day for me.
Some movement and exercise does help but then I tire and it hurts. No activity also hurts a lot. Sitting at the computer hurts just as much. My mind gets tire and numb. All of this is real, real bad right now which is why I am still not on flickr, just trying to rest and make it through a work day. I can't not work. I need to eat and live and insurance you know.
The rest of my body is the same way front and back (even my bottom hurts) but I will spare you from seeing the rest of me, lol.
